「地球環境科学と私」第六回は地球化学講座 M1 張 洲さんによる「The stream in memory」です.
I am from the department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Nagoya University and my research topic is developing a new ocean monitoring method using macroalgae. Here is a story about the reason why I choose Earth Environment Science to be my major.
Although it is a bit of cliche, the beginning of my connection to Earth Environment Science did comes from my family. Since my grandpa was a farmer and he did not want to move to the city, so far as long as I can remember, every weekend I would have come to the countryside to have lunch with him. That was the time when I learned the beauty of the nature. Why don't I go to the department of agricultural? I hate the stink of chicken shit.
When I was a child, there were two things that I was looking forward to mostly on the weekend. One was what is good for lunch, and the other was the clear stream near my grandpa’s yard. In summer, after lunch, I liked sitting near the stream, eating my watermelon and watching the stream bathed in sunshine. It was just so amazing that when you saw the fish swimming in the water, you could sense the vitality of life and the water was so clear that you would like to take a sip of it. Feeling the coolness brought by the breeze, I could watch the stream for hours until my mom called me. At that time, I thought I could have it forever.
As time went by, the farmers began to cut trees down and couples of factories were built near the stream. Afterwards, the stream was getting smaller and smaller, dirtier and dirtier. Finally one day, it vanished. When I grow up, I often miss my stream. I think there must be a lot of natural environments full of memories in this world, like my stream, which are damaged due to problems of one kind or another. I hope to do my part to protect these memories and make it last for as long as I can. That’s why I choose to study environmental science.
Japan is one of the best countries in environmental protection and I also have a strong interest in Japanese culture. After coming to Nagoya University, as an overseas student, I deeply felt the care and support from teachers and students. Here, I can not only learn amounts of knowledge of environmental science, but also lots of interesting culture of japan. If you are interested in studying in Japan, Nagoya University will not let you down.
